PALM BAY – Sometimes the opportunity not only comes to create something new, but to help improve the experience of those who use a particular service.
Such is the case of Affordable Tree Trimming Service, a local company created by Dickson Castro that provides preventive maintenance on all types of trees, including those near power lines.
Last year, as COVID-19 paralyzed the U.S. economy, Castro saw the moment to start an entrepreneurial venture in Palm Bay.
With the help of his wife, Elizabeth Martinez, and their two daughters, Castro launched his business with the idea of not only offering a quality service at an affordable price, but also creating jobs and helping the community in the midst of the pandemic.
“I come from Puerto Rico and I know how expensive and hard this type of work is,” said Castro. “I realized that people pay a lot for it, and it got into my head that I could do it at a generous price.”
He said Affordable Tree Trimming Service does what no one wants to do; that is, they reach the furthest parts of residential yards, cut trees that are in contact with wiring or in the middle of water, respond to emergencies at any time, take care of every detail and leave spaces free of debris after completing each job.
They are prepared to attend to environmental emergencies, including floods, and they make payment plans for those clients who do not have the money to pay for the service at the time it is done.
“This is a personalized tree pruning job because you have to adjust to the needs of each person and that has helped us grow,” Castro said.
“We work throughout Brevard County day and night, whatever time. Every dollar that the client pays to us is well paid,” he said, adding that the referrals for his company have incredibly boosted his business.
Through Affordable Tree Trimming Service, Castro is using his extensive training and work experience is other areas. Previously, he worked at Walt Disney Central Shop, Chromalloy Gas Turbine and Southeast Aerospace as an industrial painter.
“I started painting engines and in the last 10 years, I worked as an airplane and helicopter painter; the training of all these companies helped me to trust my abilities to start my own business,” he said.
“It is not easy to drop a juicy salary to take risks, but I can say that I succeeded, and it has been one of the best decisions I’ve made.”
Castro used his savings to start the business and purchased the equipment. He also used vehicles that he managed to restore and paint himself.
“I managed all this without going into debt with the bank, just using my savings and my knowledge,” he added.
Castro considered his work a hobby and believes this has been one of the keys to his success.
“I feel super proud of my business because as a Hispanic, I managed to enter a very difficult field and to do it in the midst of an economic crisis due to the pandemic,” he said.
Affordable Tree Trimming Service offers residential, commercial and institutional rates. They also offer advice and estimates from qualified technical personnel.
